I have a nine year old female (spayed) Shih Tzu that has been crying and whining straight for the last 24 hours. I took her to the vet today, and she could not see anything other than tenderness of her abdomen as a cause. She was given an NSAID pain shot and medication to calm her stomach.... but she is still really sad and whining off and on and I have no idea what to do to help her.
she is eating normally and doesn't seem to have any other issues?
There is really no answer for that. We can't read our animals mind. You will notices slight changes in the normal acivity though when he/she has problems with their age. Mostly uncontrolled bowels and urine leakage. We had a keeshound that dug herself a grave and would lay in it everyday and then one night she went and layed in it, never moved when her name was called, and just kind of looked like she was ready to go and died with my mom right beside her while she laid in the hole "grave" she dug for herself. But in all honesty you'll never have a definite answer but you as the owner and the closest thing to your pet will know when enough is enough, and you will understand the look in their eyes when they are just to tired to go on. Just know that what ever decision you choose whether induced or natural death that your pet will understand that you did it for them and what you thought would be best for them.
you can tell that he is in pain because he doesnt look the same as usual
if dogs are in pain they usually lie down on the floor or try to tell the owner that their not feeling very well

While dogs are not known to shed tears when in pain or feeling sadness, new studies show that dogs can actually shed tears of joy. This is most prevalent when being reunited with their owners after an extended period away.

Usually, dogs will act more aggressively if they are in pain. But this is not the rule- you just have to watch carefully to see if the behavior of the dog is in any way unusual.
yes.
Cats commonly cry if they are hungry.
he feels your pain also.
because they do not have to if you dont not inflict pain to them. you cry when you either 1. is in extreme pain or irritation or 2. emotional sadness. so if they do not experience either of the two, there is no reason for them to cry.
People cry because they're sad, really happy, or in pain.
