Do hermit crabs prefer glass cages or wire cages?

glass cages, thy can see their reflection, and don't feel lonely.Or give them a friend Glass cages are better at keeping in humidity and maintaining a proper environment for the crabs basic needs. Wire cages are not recommended.

Is it mad if hermit crabs sleep all day?

That depends on what you mean by "sleep." Hermit crabs are nocturnal, which means they usually come out at night. The reason they are nocturnal in their native habitat is because it is too hot for them to come out during the day, though you will see them out and about on overcast days. When hermit crabs are kept in captivity and their conditions are perfect, they will occasionally cease being strictly nocturnal and will roam their cages during the daytime. A hermit crab that stays in its shell, and does not move all winter is probably dead. Winter is a hard time for most hermit crabs, because most hermit crab owners do not understand that hermit crabs must be kept in humid conditions, at temperatures above 75 degrees. When the temperature gets below 65 they start to slow down and will eventually die if they stay cold for too long. If their cage is not humid enough, they will suffocate to death because they require humid air to breathe properly. As a side note, the plastic boxes most places sell as hermit crab cages are TERRIBLE for hermit crabs. A person interested in owning and caring for hermit crabs should be ready to spend at least $50 (preferably more!) on a good home for them, a glass aquarium with a snug-fitting glass lid to hold in humidity, and a reliable heat source.

Do hermit crabs need glass cages?

No but it needs to be big enough (ten gallons for every 2-3 small hermies) And you have to keep in mind if a heater will melt the plastic.

Can a hermit crab climb up the glass wall of an aquarium?

Hermit crabs can climb many things but glass is not one if them Edit: My Small Hermit crab has climbed out of his 10g tank 4 times in the past 2 weeks. It has solid glass walls about 12" high, with the only thing of any height at all is a half coconut that rises roughly 4 inches. I wish he would do it while we are home so we can see, but there is no option but he is somehow climbing the glass. His larger buddy in the same tank does not seem to possess the same spiderman capabilities. kdp

What should you give a hermit crab in order for them to live?

a hermit crab needs more than one friend normally. you should have a plastic or glass aquarium. crabby will need a hermie hut and a food bowl or shell. your crab will need water and something to climb on. and best of all a loving home.

Can hermit crabs escape their cage?

Hermit crabs are rather crafty little climbers. In the wild they spend part of their time in trees. They have pointy little leg tips that can easily poke into the silicone on the corner of a fish tank and can climb all the way to the top and out. This is why it is a good idea to have a metal mesh top with a glass cover to help hold in humidity, and to help hold in your crabs! Don't assume they can't climb out. Mine regularly climb up the air hose that goes to their bubbler pond, and also the cord that leads to the thermostat sensor that controls the UTH temperature. hermit crabs should never be kept in a wire cage, as they are sensitive to metals and unless you live in a humid, tropical climate, their gills will dry out and they will slowly suffocate. they need 70-80% humidity.

What can you use as a lid for your hermit crab?

in a ten or five gallon tank, you can use one of the lids especially made for those tanks. Those are the only cages hermit crabs can live in, so if you don't have a glass 10 gallon tank, get one! Make sure the lid has airholes

How many hermit crabs is good to have in a 10 gallon tank?

It depends upon the size of the hermit crab. You can fit 5-7 small crabs in a 10 gallon tank but only 1 or 2 large crabs. The more room you leave for your crabs the happier and healthier they will be. be careful not to overcrowd your tank, cos the hermits can get stressed, and may leave their shell or crawl into a corner and sulk :) But probably two or three would be enough room

Does mold grow in hermit crab cages?

It can, but it's more rare than it actually growing in the cage, especially if you have a glass tank.

How do you know if your hermit crab is a male or female?

Female hermit crabs have gonopores on their second set of walking legs, whereas male hermit crabs do not have gonopores at all. You can see pictures to illustrate this by clicking on the related link, below. You may be able to see whether your hermit crab has gonopores during or after it's weekly bath. You could also try to see by gently placing the crab inside a clear glass bowl and, as the crab tries to climb the slippery surface, you may be able to view the second pair of walking legs. However, many hermit crabs are reluctant to come far enough out of their shells for you to tell whether they have gonopores or not. Some may never let you see. You should not try holding the crab above a table and making it reach out as your crab can easily hurt itself by doing this. You must be very patient and must never try to force them to come out of their shell. Pulling on the crab can seriously harm, or even kill, the crab because it will hold so tightly to the shell to try and protect itself that you could tear it apart.Per #6 of WikiAnswers Copyright Violation and Plagiarism Policy cited from Crab Street Journal.com
