"The right" as opposed to "the left" originally referred to people who supported the monarchy during the French Revolution, and was extrapolated to mean people who support the status quo and "tradition". In the US today, right-wingers support laissez-faire economic policies, have a traditionalist, often religiously based view of society that emphasizes patriotism, and distrust governmental attempts to create equality through social programs. Right wing policies and rhetoric in the US during the twentieth century were very much shaped by anti-communism. The American right is usually associated with the Republican party, but some things the Republicans have done recently are not strictly right-wing. Neoconservatism, for instance, can't be considered purely a product of the right.
