The GEN light is supposed to light up when the car is started as an indication that the light is functional. If it remains on after the car is started, however, your generator (alternator) is either malfunctioning or not working.

With a key...
Dead or weak battery? Alternator not charging battery properly?
The light may turn on due to uncleanliness of the start key. For this reason, it must be cleaned.
people start buying Chevy cars
The security system shuts the whole car down so that it cant be stolen.
I have a 2001 Monte Carlo and mine started sputtering. It took me about a month to fix it but all I needed was a tune up....but all I did basically is change the spark plugs and wires out and now it runs great
It could be you're alarm if you have one. Or it might also be that the sensor for the alti-theft isn't working. I have a remote starter in my 1996 Monte Carlo and they had to by-pass the alti-theft and that is why mine is on.

Turn car on but don't start the engin. Pump breaks a couple times. Turn Key to off then start engin all the way. Light should be off.
