The simplest way is to bring your mouse cursor towards the top left or bottom left corner and then the Charms bar will appear. Then, press the Settings icon and after that press the Power icon. You will see three options - Sleep, Shut Down and Restart. Press Restart and volia, your laptop will restart on your own. There is another way that is faster, which is to press Alt and F4 together and then select Restart from the drop down menu.
I stick a paper clip into the hole somewhere on the laptop for an emergency reset when the computer is frozen. The hole positions vary but they seem to be on all the laptops I have used. I also just hold down the start button until it stops Windows and turns off the power. Not a good way to shut down but sometimes needed. Then wait 30 seconds and press the button again to restart.

If you have a windows laptop (which is most likely) try ctr + alt + F4 and if that doesn't work hold down the off button and then restart it, all of your data will be saved, or (if it isn't frozen and you dont want to shutdown for safety reasons), then press the windows key and press restart, if that doesn't work then take your battery out and wait for 30 seconds, then put it back in and hopefully this will work and get rid of that virus.
