A Joule is a unit of energy. 1 watt is 1 Joule per second. Therefore 1 kilowatt is 1 kilojoule per second. The prefix 'kilo' just means 'times one thousand'.

The Joule is defined as the energy required to move a mass of 1 kg by 1 meter against a force of 1 Newton. This is in the SI system of units.

If you are more familiar with pounds and feet, 1 Joule = 0.7376 ft.lbf, so 1 kilojoule = 737.6 ft.lbf. 1 kilojoule also = 0.9478 BTU = 238.8 calories.

You may be familiar with the 'mechanical eqivalent of heat', 1 calorie = 4.1868 joule.

A kilojoule is 1000 Joules. The Joule is the fundamental SI unit of energy. The simplest definition in mechanical terms is that it is the work done in moving 1 meter against a force of 1 Newton. If you want it in ft lb units, 1 Joule = 0.7376 ft lbf. In electrical energy terms, 1 Watt = 1 Joule per second. In thermal energy terms, 1 calorie = 4.2 Joules, or you can express it as 1 kilojoule = 0.9478 BTU

The 'kilo' in 'kilojoules' stands for the multiplier "1,000" .

So 1 kilojoule = 1,000 joules.

The same 'kilo' is also found in

-- Kilometer (distance, 1,000 meters)

-- Kilohertz (frequency, 1,000 hertz)

-- Kilopascal (pressure, 1,000 pascals)

-- Kilowatt (power, 1,000 watts)

-- Kilowatt-hour (energy, 1,000 watt-hours)

How many joules in a kilojoule?

I may be wrong, but kilo I think stands for 1000. Since a kilojoule is larger than a joule, I believe that you have to move the decimal point to the left. For example you would have less than 1 whole kilojoule in a joule, so it would be some thing like .00001 or something to that effect.
