Waterford Crystal, an Irish crystal glass company, was commissioned to create a centrepiece for the countdown to 2000 in Times Square, New York. At 11:59pm the Millennium Ball was lowered to the countdown of the last remaining seconds of the year. A wooden and iron ball had been used in this ceremony prior to that, going back to 1907. For Times Square 2000, the New Year's Eve Ball was completely redesigned by Waterford Crystal. The Ball is a geodesic sphere, six feet in diameter, and weighs approximately 1,070 pounds. It is covered with a total of 504 Waterford Crystal triangles that vary in size and range in length from 4 inches to 5 inches per side. For the 2006 New Year's Eve celebrations, 72 new triangles were added featuring the 'Hope for Fellowship' design. The remaining 432 triangles feature designs from previous years including, Hope for Wisdom, Hope for Unity, Hope for Courage, Hope for Healing, Hope for Abundance and Star of Hope. All of the 696 lights and 90 rotating pyramid mirrors are computer controlled, enabling the Ball to produce a state-of-the-art light show. An estimated 2 billion TV Audience watch this event.
