In 2004 a physician named Richard Joseph Chapin built a large light collector roughly 60 feet wide and 50 feet high in the Arizona desert. It is made of dozens of individual reflectors attached to a large frame, and can be moved to stay in synch with the movements of the moon. The purpose of the device was to collect light from the stars and/or moon to study its effects on the health and wellbeing of people. The term moon tanning is a fanciful term for the experience of exposing oneself to the collected light. The light is not bright enough to cause tanning even when 'collected', and people remain in the light only for brief periods of one or two minutes. Anecdotal self reports of various kinds of improvements are documented, but there has been little interest in the device or the experience in the last few years.
