Kairi: "Kai" is spelt with the kanji for "sea". Nomura never explained what "ri" was spellede with but it is commonly spelled with the kanji for "village".

The name Namine from Kingdom Hearts means "ocean wave" while Kairi's name means "wave" they did it to also add a name connection between them. Sora's means sky and Riku means earth/land.
