Quartz can be difficult to distinguish by looks because of its many varieties. It is usually colorless, white or gray but uncommon varieties occur in all colors. It can be transparent to translucent, and has a greasy luster. It has no cleavage and forms hexagonal prism and pyramids.

Quartz can have several different colors, including clear, pink, red, black, white and yellow. It is a form of glass and may take the shape of large crystals.

The igneous rock obsidian is comprised mostly of dark glass, which is volcanic glass. Sometimes obsidian can have a glittery reflectiveness due to microscopic plagioclase feldspar crystals. This can give it a golden-sheen.
