Post-colonial literally means after colonization. So, in context, a post-colonial fairytale/myth is anything that originated with the Western peoples that colonized the United States. This era was characterized by a strive for the American literary identity. Washington Irving best displays this search with myths such as "Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle". Though those two works were derived from elements of German and other European folklore, they helped to form the basis of an American identity in literature. You could eXtend this era all the way through Fennimore Cooper, who wrote some of the first American novels was regarded for a while as "The American Author", and even to Emerson who sought to further the American literary identity with works such as "Self-Reliance" and "The American Scholar".
