The incantation Protego activates a Shield Charm.
Protego Totalum is a spell that protects an area from magic, like a force field. :)
Protego is a shield, and you can't really counter-attack a shield. However it is mentioned that Protego cannot protect you from more advanced spells, so I guess you can try using a more advanced spell.
Protego.
Protego.
protego
No, Protego is.
It depends on if you are already hit by the spell or not. If you are already hit (or someone else is hit and you want to fix them), Fenite Incantatem would be it. If someone is trying to hit you, the best way to protect yourself would be any variation of protego (protego totalum, protego maxima, etc.)
Protego!Protego is the shield charm, a spell that creates an energy barrier which deflects minor to moderate hexes as well as physical objects. It will not repell any Unforgivable Curse. The Shield Charm is a moderately difficult spell. Fred and George Weasley realized that most adult wizards, even those employed by the Ministry of Magic, could not produce a functional Shield Charm. They used this to their advantage when marketing their line of protective clothing (hats, cloaks, etc), upon which Shield Charms were cast.
These spells don't exist in the reality, so it is up to you to decide. Actually, I don't remember 'Protego Totalum' in any of the books, but of course I may have forgot.
