this is according to my nursing drug handbook: 2005Mosby's nursing Drug Reference, page 908. It is a antipsychotic med. the action of the drug is unknown, but may be medicated through both DOPamine type 2 and serotinin type 2 antagonism. it sounds to me that pretty much this is saying that it may be blocking the dopamine and serotonin secretions with in the brain, but is really unknown, so it would be best to ask your doctor or pharmacist.

ANOTHER RISPERDAL ANSWERAccording to my medical textbook the answer is as follows: "While the exact mechanism of action of risperidone (risperdal) is unknown, it appears to alter the activity of certain chemicals in the central nervous system to produce a tranquilizing and antipsychotic effect". (*1) (*1) Prescription and OTC Drugs- pharmacological resources Deborah Wible and the staff of the Department of Pharmacy, Beth Israel Medical Center, New York City. You can also ask any good pharmacy for a medication printout for risperidone. GOOD LUCK............<<>>

It blocks dopamine so your body, unfortunately, in turn creates more and increases the dopamine receptors. So when you get off you'll have tons of "excess dopamine" If that in fact was the case.

Since it is a potent antipsychotic drug which is mainly used to treat schizophrenia it probably works like other drugs. The way that drugs work in the brain is that they change the chemical envirnoment between the nerve cells and that changes the way the impulses are transmitted. The only way to change the way the nerves are connected is by retraining it, and that is usually done with talk therapy. That's why they usually do them both together, re-training and drugs.
