"Ser" translates as "to be", but is used under specific conditions.

One of the most difficult aspects of learning Spanish for non-native speakers is that Spanish has two distinct verbs for "to be" with two completely distinct meanings: "Ser" and "Estar". These verbs can NOT be used interchangeably and the substitution of one for the other will either change the meaning or make the statement into gibberish.

"Ser" has six main uses: characteristics, time-telling, origination, profession/function, existential claims, and passive verbs. "Estar" has six main uses: location, weather, transient circumstances, emotions, health, and progressive verbs. While this division is imperfect and there are case which deviate from these general rules, they are not terribly common.
