In Chapter 28 of To Kill a Mockingbird, while everyone is in the room where Jem is resting, Sheriff Heck Tate comes in and informs them that Bob Ewell was lying on the ground dead with a kitchen knife stuck under his ribs.
Sheriff Heck Tate visits Atticus Finch to inform him that Tom Robinson is being moved to the Maycomb jail due to safety concerns, as there have been rumors of a lynch mob planning to take matters into their own hands. Heck Tate advises Atticus to stay vigilant and keep a close eye on the situation.
The men come to talk to Atticus about moving Tom Robinson from the Maycomb jail to the County jail because they think it is dangerous to keep him in the Maycomb cells. They thought that a mob (white men) might try and raid the station and kill tom before the trial.
He was shot trying to escape. They shot him 17 times just as he got over the fence.
He tells her that Tom was shot and killed in attempted escape.
He tells Aunt Alexandra, Scout, Calpurnia, and Miss Maudie that Tom Robinson attempted to escape and was shot seventeen times.
That tom Robinson was shot 17 times and then died
