What is sustainabilty and why is it important?

Sustainability is long term viability. It means that you can continue to do something, without running of something that is necessary for what you are doing, and without causing some disaster which would also require you to stop what you are doing. The burning of fossil fuels (petroleum, coal, natural gas) is not sustainable because we have only limited quantities of them and we will run out of them, and in addition, as we burn them we are causing an excess of carbon dioxide to build up in the atmosphere, which threatens to cause environmental catastrophes (which seem to already be happening, in their early stages). Solar power, by comparison, is sustainable. We won't run out of sunlight, and we also do no environmental harm by using it.
