The aboriginal children that were taken away from their families by white Australian Government policy, beginning in 1869 and continuing until the 1970s.
This caused great pain still seen in the adults who were taken away. Some reunited with their birth mothers. Some who had a white mother or father, who had mixed with original Aboriginal, did not know they were half aboriginal. If they were adopted into a white family and had looked white they were very shocked to later find out about their aboriginal heritage. The 'advantage' for those is they received a white education - some at the best private schools. So on returning to their other family could bring some new ideas. Most in that circumstance embrace both halves of their family. White and black. Others who did not get that education seemed to suffer emotionally. It can be argued that this was deliberate disenfranchisement because the Crown does not actually own Australia : the aborigines do.
The legality of it was the Crown was to manage the land until the indigenous population had the ability to self govern as a whole land. As Australia has great mineral wealth in gold, iron ore, and uranium, keeping the indigenous population (the rightful owners) confused, disenfranchised and disempowered would be a great advantage to exploitation by Australian corporations.
