  1. A VORT (וואָרט) is an engagement party or pre-marriage ceremony known as "The Breaking of the Plate." The literal meaning of "vort" is "word," whereby the prospective bride and groom give their formal commitment-- i.e, their "word"-- to marry. A ceramic plate is traditionally broken-- customarily by the couple's mothers-- to signify the seriousness (and finality) of the couple's commitment to each other, similar to the groom's breaking of a glass under the chupah.
  2. A second meaning is a short, 15-minute or so, discourse on a topic of Torah, Talmud, or Midrash.
  3. A third meaning is an epigrammatic statement, usually in the name of a Hassidic Rabbi, distinguished by its cleverness, wittiness or philosophical uniqueness.
