Is the "for the dead" supposed to limit the prohibition in the second part, and does the second part only apply to tattooed writing (that is the word used that Douey translates as "figures or marks") or does it apply broadly? One feature of many translations is that the translators have attempted to resolve ambiguities in the original Hebrew, imposing a sense of certainty on a text that is actually rather ambiguous.
