Ignition Distributor Engine Speed Control Circuit
The most common problem for this is the wiring harness at the crank position sensor. I don't know what kind of insulation Ford used on these wires, but it will turn brittle and crumble with age. The only real fix is to replace the harness with a good one, usually from a junkyard since Ford no longer has this harness, and would probably charge an arm and a leg for it if they did.
