I work on Macs at my job. From my understanding, that spinning rainbow wheel indicates that the computer is trying to run an application, but is unsuccessful. It is similar to the stuck hour-glass in windows.
It also means that it is busy doing something, if the computer is taking longer then normal then it will show the "Beach Ball" to let you know to wait a few seconds until it can finish. If it's spinning for just a few seconds then that's ok but if it's been longer then a few minutes then the application you were using has probably crashed and it's just as well to "Force Quit" the Application you were using. You did save recently, didn't you? "Apple menu"/scroll down to" Force Quit...."/ then click on the dead application. You can also press Command-Option-Escape. If you have a lot of open applications in the back ground and you haven't quit them, they still take up a certain amount of Ram and then the computer has that much Less Ram to use, so it takes longer to do things.
If you're familiar with Windows, it's pretty much the same as an application "Not Responding".
