Two ways.

Firstly an ultrasound can be done to see if the baby is still there. If they can identify the baby on an ultrasound, they will attempt to stop the bleeding (if you are severely bleeding). If no baby can be seen, they will assume it has broken away already and died.

Another way to check is to take a blood test. They will test the amount of HCG in your blood. On a normal pregnancy, this number will approximately double each day. Therefore in a non-emergency situation, by doing a blood test three days in a row, they will check your HCG levels. If they are doubling each day, you are fine. If they are steady or falling, you have lost the pregnancy.

My wife misscaried somewhere in her 3rd month. There was nothing for the doctor to do. We were told that the body naturally knows what to do and it some how dissolves it. That is the way it was in our case. If you are further along it might be different. Good luck.

Answer:

It depends on the situation.

If some of the tissue is left behind it can cause a infection which can be deadly. You really should see a doctor bout a D&C 'Dilatation and curettage' they open up the cervix and scrape the lining clean. to avoid any of these nasty infections, you may possibly get if anything is remaining inside of you.

They first check your vital signs to see if your doing okay, and when they check for a miscarriage, they take the baby out if it hasn't already came out and then they release you. somehospitals are different though.

If there are remains inside you will have to get a D&C, a procedure that scrapes the uterus clean.
