What does the egr part do and why would it need replacement on a brand new Ford Freestyle?

EGR stands for Exaust Gas Recirculation. It does just that, circulates exaust gases into the intake system, for better fuel economy, efficiency, and reduced emmissions. Why it would need replaced? Becuase anything built by humans is subject to defect. Just because it's new doesn't mean it cant be bad. That's why there is a warranty. If there never any problems, Ford would never need to give you a warranty. The cars are put together with parts that come from suppliers all over the world. Just like you might go to the store and by something that is defective, Ford can also get a part right out of the box that is defective. They install it, not knowing it's defective, until you buy the car, bad part and all.
