In the United States, the federal government refers to three branches-- the Executive (the president), the Legislative (the congress) and the Judicial (the supreme court). Each has its own duties, as outlined by the constitution, and each one is part of our system of checks and balances so that one branch does not get too powerful. One thing the federal government does is make the laws (a role assigned to congress). Congress can also levy taxes, decide whether we will go to war, and produce the federal budget, so that government agencies have enough money to operate.
