It is a clever response to the idea of luck. He was saying the harder he worked the more rewarding his accomplishments were. In a sense, he was saying he made his own luck.

The question is a little confusing - what do you mean by "get homework later"? If you mean getting homework after they work, you'd think they'd be less likely to do more work on top of it.
