In many ways, geographically, Chile is the California of The South, also The Oregon and Alaska of the South. Because Chile is similar to the US West Coast. Just consider that seasons are reversed.

Central Chile is Like Central California, Valparaiso is like San Francisco near the woody Coastal Mountains, Santiago is the capital like Sacramento (central Valley, great for fruits and wines) and the state eastern border is Andes which is more impassable and higher than Sierra Nevada.

As California did, Chile was a land of pioneers and settlers and also of Indians (Mapuche Tribe 5%) which rapidly were absorbed by Spanish soldiers and immigrant and settlers especially from Southern Europe (Spain, Italy, Croatia and Levant countries) and Germany.

The quality of life is the highest in Latin America, reaching similar levels to Southern Europe but without bulls and castles. So many Chilean towns has some American characteristic: shopping malls, skyscrapers, highways and hardworking people. Santiago is like a modern NYC new trends on architecture and technology.
