'Philia' is a Greek word and was the name of one of Aristotle's four types of love.

According to a number of sources, the closest English translation is 'friendship'.

Aristotle's definition was a lot broader in that it included relationships we would describe as 'acquaintanceships' as well as the more familiar friendships.

The other three types of Aristotelian love were:

  1. Agape: Unconditional, or 'pure' love
  2. Storge: The love of family
  3. Eros: Sexual or marital love
