It comes from Middle English dingel - a deep dell or hollow, often wooded. Also a small valley or dale.

"The Dingle" in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, is a very well-known and popular public garden which is built in a natural hollow, hence the name - I have very fond memories of visits there as a child.

The word "dingle" typically refers to a small, narrow, secluded valley or hollow, often wooded. It is often used in place names in Ireland and the UK to describe such geographical features.
