Reset the whole thing and there should be a little red switch which says reset in the boot or on the steering wheel

The maintenance light can be reset by pressing the red reset button on the right side below the ignition area, pass the panel. If you don't mind looking under the steering column, you should be able to see it. there is a little switch under the dashboard on the drivers side under the steering wheel just flip it and it should go off You will find a switch under the steering wheel area. It may be a black retangular plastic unit, with a blue push switch. In order to turn off the Maintenance Required signal, you must first, start your car on, then click the switch a couple of times until the Maintenance Required signal turns off. If you can't find it by touch, find it using a flashlight.
Things You'll Need: Socket wrench Phillips Screwdriver Steering wheel puller Torx screwdriver Instructions 1. Turn the engine of the Jimmy off and open the vehicle's hood. Using a socket wrench, remove the ground terminal from the Jimmy's battery. 2. Remove the two screws from behind the steering wheel. Pull off the steering wheel cover and disconnect the wiring harness from the cover. Remove the cover from the steering wheel. 3. Remove the horn wiring harness by disconnect its tab and pulling it off the steering wheel. 4. Remove the steering wheel bolt. Use the wheel puller tool to remove the steering wheel. 5. Remove the four screws from the lower dash panel under the steering wheel and pry it off the vehicle. 6. Remove the two Torx screws from the lower steering column over and remove the lower cover form the vehicle. 7. Pry off the upper column with a slotted screwdriver. Remove the metal plate underneath the steering column by removing its four screws. 8. Remove the red and black screws securing the wiper switch to the steering column. Unplug the cruise control electrical connection to the left of the wiper switch. 9. Remove the wiper switch screws with a Phillips screwdriver and disconnect its electrical connection. At this point, you can pull out the lever and install a new lever. Reassembly is the reverse of the wiper switch removal procedure.
The red steering wheel in the instrument cluster means that the steering wheel is not locked into position. There should be a black lever on the left or right side of the steering column. This is the lever to release when you want to adjust the steering wheel up or down. Push the lever back up to lock into place and the indicator should go out. If it is still on when the steering wheel is locked, then that could be a electrical fault with the sensor.

A small red light to the left of the steering wheel on a 1994 explorer is an indicator for the headlamps. This light lets the driver know that the headlamps are on.

If this helps, for a 2002 Mercedes c230... Look for a red lever under the steering wheel and above the E-brake pedal. Pull that red lever and then pull on the latch under the grill in the front of the car.
