It tells us many things - here are some of the major ideas. First, God creates out of God's own good pleasure - nothing compels God to create. Second, God creates everything out of nothing, and in this creation there is an order. Third, God's creation is good and it pleases God. In addition,, we learn that human beings were created to be in a special relationship to God and the rest of creation.

The story of creation tells us about the religious beliefs of the ancient Jews and about their understanding of the world, but nothing about the world itself.

Quite a lot but one must read the words more closely to see that this is not the 'original' creation but in fact a renewal of the face of the Earth (see Psalm 104:30) and the re-making of the physical world for the reign of man. The Universe was already present, just not all properly aligned for mankinds needs.

It reveals the Creator, or what scientist call the first cause of the Big Bang. It describes it beginning with everything being 'good' until the fall of man in the Garden. Today, a growing number of Scientist - Chemist and Biologist - agree that life came from clay templates (made Adam from the red clay). Twentieth-century Physics basically describes the start of the universe virtually in the same cosmological terms - space, time and matter came out of nothing in a single burst of light which became via enormously large probabilities, entirely hospitable to our carbon-based life. Geologist and Archaeologist more and more so, are stating that this 'Story of Creation' is holding up well under modern scrutiny.

The immutable fundamental laws of Science itself, thermodynamics and biogenises, support this account in the Bible. So we see, the more Science uncovers about our beginnings or origins (what Genesis means), the more in line they become with the Genesis account. Harmony is coming at last but we must be patient. Soon, we may have a joint accounting of the world - God and man.

The first account, in Genesis 1:1-2:4a, tells us that God is all-powerful, simply speaking things into existence. This account is attributed by scholars to the 'Priestly Source', writing during or shortly after the Babylonian Exile.

The second account, in Genesis 2:4b-25, tells us that God's powers are more limited. He can not make living things out of nothing, and must make Adam, then the animals, out of dirt. This account is attributed by scholars to the 'Yahwist', writing almost five hundred years earlier.
