What does the symbol with CHECK on it mean - just purchased a Matiz SE 1998 car but it came with no manual?

It means something is wrong within the engine or emission settings. You need to get a mechanic to run a quick diagnostic check on it to find the fault - it could be anything from an injector needing replacing (common on a Matiz), or the catalytic convertor isn't working right.

i had the very same problem on my 1999 matiz,it was a broken wire on the fuel injector.(i'd changed the distributor cap,fuel filter,plugs etc before finding out it was this)hope this helps.
