The men who originally copied The Bible from one form and translated or copied it to another book were called scribes. Scribes copy scripture, though they get no credit, for the ideas are not at all theirs.

The English etymology of the word "Scripture" is from Middle English, which took it from the Latin scriptura'writings,' from script- 'written,'from the verb scribere. (Note: Middle English is the name given to the language spoken in England between the 11th and mid-15th centuries.)

I don't believe there is a recorded "first instance" of the word being used in writing.

In the King James version, the word - scripture - first appears in
