The Senate is composed of 100 Senators, two from each state in the nation. Of these 100 people, 84 are men and 16 are women. There are three Hispanic/Latino members of the Senate (Mel Martinez, Ken Salazar, and Robert Menendez), one African American/black member of the Senate (Barack Obama), and two Asian/Pacific Islanders (Akaka and Inouye). So, let's look at our "typical" senator. It will be a man, specifically a white man. He'll be in his early 60s, and he'll have a law degree. And he's slightly more likely to caucus with the Democratic party than with the Republicans.
