The upside down cross is the Petrine Cross (The Cross of Saint Peter). The Catholic tradition states that Peter wanted to be crucified upside down because he did not believe that he was worthy of being crucified in the manner that Jesus Christ was crucified. Therefore, an upside down cross is the Cross of Saint Peter.

However, the upside down crucifix (a cross with the body of Jesus Christ on it) has been attached to satanic things. Not sure about history on that one.
