The concentration of the isotope uranium 235 in natural uranium is approx. 0,7 %. Enrichment is the process which increase this concentration. The necessary concentration for military use - atomic bombs is more than 90 %. Also many nuclear reactors work with enriched uranium (but with only 3-5 % uranium 235).

Enrichment processes separate different isotopes of an element, producing products having increased levels (enriched) and decreased levels (depleted) of the desired isotope from that which occurs naturally. The depleted material is usually considered waste, but as with many waste products several uses have been developed for depleted uranium.

The two most common elements that undergo enrichment are uranium and hydrogen (the last and the first naturally occurring elements on the Periodic Table).

  • in uranium the desired isotope is U-235 because it readily supports fission
  • in hydrogen the desired isotope is H-2 or deuterium (aka heavy hydrogen) because it makes an effective reactor neutron moderator and can be used in nuclear weapon as it undergoes fusion at a lower temperature than ordinary hydrogen

Uranium is enriched to one of two different levels depending on its intended use:

  1. 3% to 5% for reactors
  2. 20% to 97% for explosives

What exactly is a cascade in terms of the enrichment of uranium?

A cascade is a stage in the process of uranium enrichment; a plant has thousands successive cascades.

Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan was a nuclear scientist and in the 1970s worked on Pakistan's Uranium enrichment program.

Enrichment of uranium faster with higher enrichment?

The higher enrichment needed the more enrichment and stripper stages needed. However the speed of enrichment depends more on how fast you can pump the uranium hexafloride through the individual stages without exceeding their limits. These limits will vary depending on enrichment technology used.

What is uranium 235 when added to natural uranium?

Uranium-235 is not added to natural uranium, it is extracted from natural uranium by a process called enrichment.

Why don't the pellets with uranium oxide start to react during the enrichment process?

1. The material for enrichment is the uranium hexafluoride (UF6) not uranium dioxide pellets. 2. For a nuclear fission and and a nuclear chain reaction we need thermal neutrons.

What gaseous uranium compound is put in to the centrifuges for enrichment?

In the industry it is called Hex. Chemically UF6 - Uranium Hexafluoride.
