the coolant temp sensor tells an on board computer (ECU) to ajust fuel mixture based on how hot or cold the engine is (hot engines require less fuel, cold engines more). if the sensor gets dirty or disconnected it will flood the engine with fuel and cause the car to run very poorly or not at all.
There are 3 temp sensors. 1 is under the spark plugs for the head cylinder temp. Another is on the thermostat housing for water temperature. And the 3rd is just beside the water temperature sensor and it's not a sensor it is a temperature switch.
Well there are 3 sensors in my 1983 280ZX and I suspect it's the same with yours. There is a thermotime switch, which measures the temp and sends a signal to the fan when the ignition is turned off I think. There is a water temp sensor. Then there is a thermal transmitter which sends the temp information to the dashboard in my digital dash. I really don't know how close this matches your 77 though.
