A good explanation?Well first it registers the temperature on the gauge in the truck. So you know when it is running too hot,or if not maybe too cold indicating a possible problem with a heater core, radiator, waterpump not working correct.Next the water temp is a crucial part of how the truck runs, and works with the emissions system to make sure the carburetor idles up,when cold and idles down to normal once warm. All of this is important and this can affect the truck alot,on emissions, and generally function and mpg for that matter. If your gauge is not working because the sending unit is defective,or a bad connection I suggest replacing the part.It is mounted directly below the thermostat housing close to the upper radiator hose.It is easy to replace and draining the cooling system is required.

Is there a method to link the mass of water and the temperature rise?

1. Measure out 1 kg of cold water into a large beaker. 2. Measure and record the initial temperature of the water. 3. Put an immersion heater into the water and switch on for a fixed period of time, eg 10 minutes. 4. Measure and record the temperature at the end. 5. Work out the change in temperature. 6. Repeat for several other masses of water.
