It depends which part of the world you are talking about. Countries that rely on their tobacco crop as a major part of their GDP or economy have different views on the matter.
Rhodesia was once called the 'bread basket of Africa' and they relied heavily on their tobacco crops to bring in revenue to buy seed and fertiliser to grow other crops to feed their people and their farm animals, such as cattle, which provided beef and milk. Rhodesia's tobacco crop and the money it generated fed most of Africa for decades.
It also provided money for good schools, hospitals and health services, and allowed money for conservation of wildlife and areas of outstanding natural beauty.
Look at Rhodesia/Zimbabwe now, with its starving people who suffer regular outbreaks of Cholera, and have AIDS they can't afford to treat, very little food in the shops and they can't even afford to print money any more because they can't pay for the paper. Draw your own conclusions about whether the tobacco crops were a completely bad thing for most of a subcontinent.
It is almost a 'knee jerk' response to say straight away how toxic smoking is, but that is intellectual laziness. We should think things through a bit better. There is good and bad in everything, and adults should be able to look at the whole picture.
My conclusion is that smoking is harmful to the health of individuals, but a tobacco crop can mean the difference between life and death for millions of people and animals.
