The property damage coverage is a part of the liability coverage and provides for the repair, replacement, or payment of the actual cash value of another party's vehicle if you hit the vehicle and the accident is your fault. There is a maximum amount available per accident listed in the declarations page of your insurance policy.

There is another interpretation of property damage coverage, which is sometimes called "collision coverage". This pays for the repair or replacement of your own car in the event of a collision. It is usually subject to a deductible (an out of pocket portion that you pay), and is not required by State Financial Responsibility Laws. However, if there is a lienholder on the vehicle, it may require that collision coverage be maintained to value of the collateral by ensuring that there are funds available to repair the vehicle.
