Villa is a Latin word. It was initially a word for a house, usually connected with farming. Originally, villas were large country houses belonging to upper class ancient Romans. They included elaborate gardens and outbuildings. They most often had lush colonnaded gardens and spectacular views of the sea or countryside. Those original villas were built for enjoyment and beauty. Some villas were like farmhouses and some were like palaces.
After the fall of the Roman Republic, villas became smaller and more functional farming compounds.
In modern times, a 'villa' can refer to houses of various sizes and types (that have nothing to do with farming). These may be in the town, in the countryside, or at the coast. They may be bungalows or they may have more than one floor. They may be attached/terrace, semi-detached or detached. Nowadays, almost any type of residence may be referred to as a 'villa,' simply because somebody wants to call it that.
