As opposed to humans, who can go out and eat something, say, salty if they want (a subconscious response to low sodium?) or a burger (protein?) dogs get only what you feed them. This, along with the simplicity for owners, is the reason why great products like Hill's Science Diet (and unfortunately many very poor products like 'Ol Roy) have multiple nutrients and minerals to balance the needs of your dog. It also reflects how many stray animals that eat only left overs from trash cans typically live to about half of their life expectancy.
