A lot more then they do now. Parents in Roman times typically taught their children everything that they knew, as there was generally no established education system. In Jewish culture a boy would typically learn the scriptural texts, and be able to recite the Torah (first 5 books of The Bible). Unilke today, fathers took a primary role in the education of their children, which was focused on basic litteracy, religion, culture and trade.
Sons would typically work with their fathers and spend lots of time in close proximity with each other. Daughters would typically spend a lot of time with their mothers and assist them with farming, gathering, preparing food and domestic duties. This close proximity relationship formed much of a child's education, and played an important role in character development.
Rabbinic sources support evidence that the literacy rate in Palestine at this time was less than 3 per cent, which demonstrates that education was limited to the children of those who could afford such a luxury. John Dominic Crossan (The Birth of Christianity) notes that Jesus was a peasant from a peasant village and therefore, for Crossan, Jesus was illiterate until the opposite is proven. He says it is not proven but simply presumed by Luke, when he has Jesus read from the prophet Isaiah in the synagogue at Nazareth in 4:16-20.
The Apostle Paul was a Jew who had learnt to write and was one of those fortunate enough to be born into a family that could afford an education for him. No doubt he was taught by a scribe, possibly in a Jewish religious school. Acts of the Apostles says that he was actually taught by the famed Gamaliel in Jerusalem, but scholars doubt that Paul really spent time in Jerusalem during the lifetime of Jesus.
Even before the time Jesus is said to have lived, free public education was made available to children in ancient Israel. These schools were initially set up by the Priests.
They were taught at home by their mothers or other women in the house.
2000 years ago, free public education was available for children regardless of societal status. Further education was available for adults.
As per the Bible, Jesus was brought up as a carpenter's son, and did not get much education, though he did read the Jewish scriptures, and he used to spend a lot of time in the Jewish temple.
Virtually all Jews in Israel at the time of Jesus had Jewish funerals, including Jesus. At that time, a Jewish funeral would have NOT included a coffin. However, according to Christian belief, Jesus was never buried.
Between the time of Jesus' birth and his being lost in the temple when he was around age twelve, is the only childhood of Jesus we know about. We are not aware of any schooling that Jesus may have received. It is guessed that he received the sane education as all other Jewish boys of his time.
During Jesus time boyslearnt at the temple.
Jesus was Jewish - he went to shul and studied with the rabbis the same as all the other Jewish boys of that time
No, Jesus Christ was not an American. In fact, America was not nationally known at that time. Jesus was Jewish.
Mary and Joseph, Jesus' parents, were Jewish.
They wore beards
