The Manson murders were a wakeup call for America. The 60s were hard on America with the war in Vietnam and the social unrest. And in the middle of all this turbulence came these 'flower children' that wanted to show the world that peace and love were the only way for society to live.
Then came Manson, who claimed to be one of these free thinkers, but had a completely different agenda. He was the dark underbelly of our social reform. When you take Manson into a bright light all you see there is a cult leader. He may have looked different then the Rev. Jim Jones or Rev. Moon but they are the same.
Manson came at the end of a decade and the end of an era. He was to some degree a contributor to the loss of our innocence, America's innocence.
