The fall of Rome caused control of much of Europe to be up for grabs, and this enabled the Byzantine and Arab empires to seize nations they needed strategically or wanted for resources. The fall of Rome also brought about the dissemination of Roman art and knowledge across the world.

The Byzantine Empire was the Roman Empire. This is the only term the Romans used. Historians have coined the terms Western Roman Empire and Eastern Roman Empire in reference to the two halves of the empire when it was co-ruled by two co-emperors, one for each side. Byzantine Empire is also a term coined by historians to refer to the Eastern Roman Empire after the fall of the Western Roman Empire.

The fall of the west did not affect the east much. The problems in the west were remote from the east, which continued to prosper. Under Justinian I many of the lands lost in the west (Italy, Africa and part of Spain) were 'reconquered,' but they were soon lost.

The Byzantine Empire had to deal with its own problems in the east, especially invasions. The Arabs took over the Middle East south of Turkey and Egypt. The Slavs conquered much of the Balkan Peninsula.

A combination of the loss of the Western Empire and, especially, the loss of most of the non-Greek territories in the east led this empire to become centred on Greece and Greek in character. Greek replaced Latin as the language of this empire in 620.

What was the effect of moving the capitol of the empire from Rome to Byzantium?

By the time of the establishment of Byzantium as the capital of the east, Rome had already ceased to be the effective capital of the empire and had became only a nominal one. Diocletian had turned Milan into the imperial capital in the west and Nocomedia (in northwest Turkey) as the imperial capital in the east as part of a system of co-emperorship. Constantine merely moved the capital of the east from Nocomedia to nearby Byzantium. He redeveloped it and renamed it Roma Nova (New Rome). However, people called it Constantinople and the name stuck.

Which Roman emperor moved the capital of the Empire to Byzantium?

The emperor Constantine I (or the Great) did not move the imperial capital of the roman Empire from Rome to Byzantium. He moved the imperial capital of the eastern part of the Roman Empire from Nicomedia (in north-western Turkey) to the nearby Byzantium, which he redeveloped and renamed after himself -- Constantinople (City of Constantine). Milan remained the imperial capital of the western part of the empire.Nicomedia and Milan had been designated as the imperial capitals of the east and west respectively by the emperor Diocletian. Rome had already ceased to be the imperial capital before Constantine.

What is the name of the emperor who was killed by his body guard in the fall of rome and the rise of byzantium?

There was not such thing as the fall of Rome and the rise of Byzantium. The term fall of Rome refers to the fall of the western part of the empire, not the fall of the city of Rome. This part of this empire fell under the weight of the invasions by the Germanic peoples. The eastern part was not affected by these invasions and continued to exist for nearly 1,000 years. Byzantine empire is a term which has been coined by historians to indicate the eastern part of the Roman empire after the fall of the western part. The people in question did not know this term and called their empire Roman Empire. Therefore, the so-called Byzantine Empire was the continuation of the Roman Empire. As for Byzantium, the name of this city changed to Constantinople more than 100 years before the Byzantine period. Therefore, there was no such thing as the rise of Byzantium either as a city of as an empire. Six Roman Emperors were killed by the imperial guard, but these were long before the fall of the western part of the Roman Empire
