The California Gold Rush began in 1848 and ended in 1855. In 1949, the Californians who were the first to start seeking gold became known as the "forty-niners." The California Gold Rush greatly affected the growth of California's population as Americans and tens of thousands of people from Latin America, Europe, Australia and Asia came to the area in search of gold. Many small California settlements grew into boomtowns with large populations. The increased population caused expansion and growth to the area.
