Scientists say that the greenhouse effect is overactive due to pollution. This pollution (mainly Carbon Dioxide) collects in the atmosphere and and heats up the earth as if the earth were a greenhouse. This has been established for over 100 years. Carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere go up as temperature goes up, and vice versa. This is a natural balancing cycle that has been going on for hundreds of millions of years, and is now being thrown out of balance by human activity.

The gases causing global warming are mainly carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4). They are both able to trap the infrared warmth rising from the surface of the earth.

Greenhouse gases in themselves are not dangerous. We need greenhouse gases to keep the earth warm enough for life. The danger is in having too much greenhouse gas, as we do now, because the greenhouse effect traps heat and is now trapping too much heat, causing global warming.

For thousands of years the levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere were around 280 ppm (parts per million) or 0.28%. This kept the earth reasonably warm. When we began burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) about 200 years ago, levels of CO2 began to rise. Now, in 2013, they have reached 400 ppm or 0.04%.
