If a diver literally tried to dive in pure oil then they would have to factor in a number of issues. Firstly, you wouldn't be able to see. Secondly, because oil is so dense, you would need a lot of weight to be able to descend. Thirdly, it would be pretty tough to swim through.

It is apparently pretty dangerous for a number of reasons including depth (60m), visibility, size of prey (Sturgeon are kind of big) etc...
