Biofuel is anything recently grown that can be burnt to provide energy. It also includes oil made from vegetation.

It affects the environment in many ways:

  • Land is cleared to grow the crops. This may mean deforestation. Or it may mean that food is no longer grown on the land, pushing food prices up.
  • It releases carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, when burnt. However, this carbon dioxide was removed from the air when the vegetation grew, so biofuel is usually carbon-neutral.

Well it is a form of renewable energy. When you use it, it doesn't pollute the air. They use manure and burn it or other waste products. Also makes lots of energy!

What influences diversity in an environment?

There are many factors in an environment that influence biodiversity, but the root is availability of resources. The more difference resources available, the higher the biomass of the environment. A higher biomass tends to mean a higher number of organisms, and where there are many organisms, specialization and formation of niches causes specification and increases the biodiversity of the environment.

Why is biomass a better alternative than coal?

The main advantage of biomass over coal is that it is "carbon neutral". This means that in order for the biomass to be created, it consumed carbon dioxide from the environment. Upon burning biomass, no additional carbon is added to our atmosphere. Coal, on the other hand, is taking carbon out of the earth and adding more to our atmosphere.
