Many countries have set aside areas of land as wildlife sanctuaries, and people are not allowed to cut down trees or hunt in these places. Species that are threatened are generally protected from hunting by law. In the oceans, methods are being invented to prevent or limit bycatch (the unintentional catching of animals on fishing lines or by fishing nets).
Unfortunately, these efforts still have a long way to go towards protecting all species from human activity. Illegal logging is very common (according to Bill Nye's show on Planet Green, "Stuff Happens," 70% of the world's lumber is logged illegally). Also, poachers continue to hunt protected animals. Although we have a long way to go, there are many examples of animals bouncing back from the brink when we protect them well enough, and I believe that if things continue to improve, the situation will be much better very soon.
