Richard Rhodes book The Making of the Atomic Bombexplains this very clearly.

Basically Little Boy used a gun to fire two subcritical pieces of 80% enriched Uranium-235 one inside the other making a single supercritical piece while Fatman used shaped charges to crush one subcritical piece of Plutonium-239 until it became dense enough to become supercritical. RADAR fusing was used on both to set the burst altitude. Everything was packaged in large freefall gravity bomb casings with fins to stabilize the fall.

Atomic Bombs work by using plutonium and uranium to reach a critical mass, at which they explode. The Uranium is a kind of "ring", and is suspended in the warhead. The plutonium is inserted into the ring, which causes an explosion, releasing around 3 or 4 kilotons of energy. This creates the mushroom cloud that the weapons are famous for. Then, the sinister part begins. Radiation released when the bomb detonated rains down, killing far more people than the explosion, and continuing to kill for hundreds of years. The body of the warhead is a plastic alloy, which disintegrates easily. The mssile is made of aluminum or steel, with a titanium exit vector control.

The second atomic bomb was dropped on 9 August. It was carried in a plane known as Bock's Car and the pilot is known to be Major Charles Sweeney. The bomb varied slightly from the first bomb- it was a plutonium implosion device nicknamed 'Fat Man'. The explosive force was greater compared to the first bomb, because 20 000 tons of TNT was used
